4th Grade Logic Puzzles

30 logic grid puzzles in three levels, one grid on every page

I love a puzzle that makes kids slow down and actually read the clues. Logic grids do exactly that. Take Pet Names, the free one on this page: four friends, four pets, three short clues, and one right answer. Kids mark the grid with X's and checks until every friend has a match. No guessing, just careful reading (and one very satisfying last box).

What's in the 4th grade pack

  • 30 logic grid puzzles, one on every page, each with its own answer box
  • Three levels of ten: three kids and a small grid, then four kids and a bigger grid, then four kids with trickier "either ... or" clues
  • Standard and Assisted versions (Assisted marks clue 1 for you and adds a one-line hint)
  • A How to Solve page that walks through one puzzle, step by step
  • A complete answer key
  • Black and white pages that photocopy cleanly

Here it is: Puzzle 14, from Level 2 of the pack. Read the clues and work out whose pet is whose. Stuck? Clue 2 gives you your first check. The grid looks just like the printed one. The full puzzle prints free just below, with the How to Solve page and the answer key.

  1. Hal's pet is not named Pepper, and neither is Amara's.
  2. Lucia's pet is named Pickles.
  3. Amara's pet is not named Sunny.

Standard and Assisted

Every puzzle comes in two versions. Same clues, same answer, same page order. The Assisted page just gives a head start: clue 1 is already marked, and a one-line hint says where to begin. One answer key covers both, so you can hand out whichever version fits.

Pet Names, Standard version: the clues, an empty 4 by 4 grid, and an answer box
Standard: the clues and an empty grid
Pet Names, Assisted version: the same clues with a hint under them, and the grid with clue 1 already marked with two X's
Assisted: clue 1 marked, plus a hint

How to solve a logic grid puzzle

The How to Solve page (it's in the free PDF too) walks through one small puzzle, start to finish. Three friends, Beau, Tomas, and Jai, each made a different art project: a mosaic, a weaving, or a sketch. Clue 1: Beau did not make the weaving. Clue 2: Neither Beau nor Tomas made the mosaic.

  1. Read clue 1. Beau did not make the weaving, so put an X where Beau and weaving meet.
  2. Read clue 2. Put an X under mosaic for Beau and for Tomas.
  3. Beau's row has one open box: sketch. Check it, then X out the rest of the sketch column.
  4. Keep going with the two rules below. Then fill in the answers.

Two rules for every puzzle:

  • When a row or column has only one open box, put a check there.
  • Each row and column gets one check. After you add a check, X out every other box in its row and column.

And the answer: Beau made the sketch, Tomas the weaving, and Jai the mosaic.

Level 3 tip: if a clue says Sam has either the cat or the dog, X out every other box in Sam's row. You don't know which one yet.

How the 4th grade pack climbs

Ten puzzles at each level, and each step up is small. Levels 2 and 3 use the same 4 by 4 grid. Once students know the routine, the only new thing at Level 3 is the trickier clues.

4th grade brain teasers

If your class wants more puzzles after these, 4th Grade Brain Teasers is the next stop. It has 40 short puzzles, two to a page: number riddles, magic squares, hidden words, and who-sits-where problems. Every teaser has one, two, or three stars. Same Standard and Assisted setup, with a hint under every Assisted teaser, and the answer key explains every answer.

There's a winter edition too. 4th Grade Winter Brain Teasers has 30 new teasers with a snowy twist, like snowflake shape math, a sled race, and a toboggan ride. It's set up the same way, with Standard and Assisted versions and an answer key that explains every answer. (Handy for those indoor recess days.)

Want all three? They're together in one bundle: the logic puzzles, the brain teasers, and the winter edition, 100 puzzles in all.

Questions teachers ask

Is the logic puzzle really free?

Yes. The PDF downloads straight from this page with no sign-up and no account. It has four pages: the How to Solve page, Pet Names in Standard and Assisted versions, and the answer key.

What grade are these logic puzzles for?

4th grade. The pack starts with three kids and a small grid at Level 1, then moves to four kids and a 4 by 4 grid, and Level 3 adds trickier "either ... or" clues.

What's the difference between Standard and Assisted?

The puzzles, clues, and answers are the same. On the Assisted page, clue 1 is already marked in the grid and a one-line hint says where to start. Both versions are in the same order, so one answer key works for both.

Is there an answer key?

Yes. The full pack has a filled answer box for every puzzle, and the free PDF ends with the answers to Pet Names.

Do the puzzles need any prep?

No. Print it, hand it out, and you're done. A pencil is the only tool, and the black and white pages photocopy cleanly.

How is this different from the Grades 3 and 4 logic puzzles pack?

The older Logic Puzzles Early Finishers pack for grades 3 and 4 mixes logic grids with Sudoku and patterns. The 4th grade pack is all logic grids, one on every page, in three levels.

For a mix of logic grids, Sudoku, and patterns, see the Logic Puzzles Early Finishers pack for grades 3 and 4. Every early finisher pack is on the early finishers page, the other free printables are on the free resources page, and everything else is on the main shop page.
