Word ladders are the quiet five minutes my classroom runs on: a puzzle that does phonics, spelling, and vocabulary work while students think they're just climbing to the next word. I built a complete no prep set for grades 1 to 5, and every page comes in two versions so the same routine fits every learner in the room.
Choose your grade
Each grade-level resource has 100 unique ladders across 50 student pages, both versions included, with teacher directions and a complete answer key. The words grow with your students: three-letter ladders in first grade, four-letter in second and third, and five-letter in fourth and fifth. The bundle collects all five grades, 500 ladders in all.
The seasonal shelf: Halloween and fall
When October energy arrives, the same routine gets a costume. The seasonal line adds 50 Halloween and cozy-fall ladders per grade (25 student pages, both versions, 200+ defined vocabulary words), with the same four levels and the same answer keys. The seasonal bundle collects all five grades, 250 ladders in all.
How a word ladder works
Students start with a word, and every rung below it asks for a new one: change a single letter, follow the clue, and land on a real word. FADE becomes FACE becomes LACE becomes LACK. The clue under each step means nobody is guessing letters at random; they're thinking about what the word actually means.
Each grade level climbs through four progressive levels, from ladders that ask students to write two words up to ladders where they build five in a row. The routine stays identical all year; only the challenge grows.

Two versions of every page
Every worksheet ships as both a Standard page and an Assisted page. The puzzles are identical; the Assisted version points each arrow at the exact letter box that changes, a small visual scaffold that lets students who need one work the same ladders as everyone else. No separate "easier" worksheet that the whole room can spot.
