Winter Word Ladders for Grades 1 to 5

Winter really starts the Monday after the break. Everyone comes back a little slower. The windows are frosty, and recess moves indoors more often than not. That’s when a routine kids already know by heart really helps.
So I gave the old routine a sweater.
The word ladder routine is five quiet minutes: start with a word, change one letter at a time, follow the clue at every step, and climb to a brand new word.
The winter set keeps every part of that. The clues just talk about snow forts, sleds, mittens, and mugs of cocoa now.

Here are three from the sets, one each from first, third, and fifth grade. Read each clue, change one letter, and climb to the bottom word.

What’s included in each winter word ladder set?
Each grade has 50 winter word ladders across 25 print-and-go worksheet pages, with two ladders to a page. Every set includes:
- A clue under every step.
- Four levels, from writing two words to writing five words with only the top word given.
- Standard and Assisted versions of every worksheet page.
- A complete answer key.
Winter, not holiday
The theme is winter, not any one holiday. Think snowplows, mittens, sleds, and cocoa, with no holiday words in the clues. So the sets work from December right through February, including in classrooms that keep holidays out of lessons.
Standard or Assisted: what’s the difference?
Both versions use the same ladders and clues. The Assisted version adds an arrow pointing at the letter that changes. It gives students an extra cue while they work through each word.
Choose winter word ladders by grade
The words grow with the grade. First graders climb from SUN to RUN to RUG to MUG. Third graders turn BOOT into FOOT into FORT into FORM. By fifth grade the ladders are five letters wide, and SKATE becomes STATE becomes STARE becomes STARS.
- 1st Grade Winter Word Ladders: Three- and four-letter words.
- 2nd Grade Winter Word Ladders: Four-letter words.
- 3rd Grade Winter Word Ladders: Four-letter words.
- 4th Grade Winter Word Ladders: Five-letter words.
- 5th Grade Winter Word Ladders: Five-letter words.
The winter word ladders bundle collects all five, 250 ladders in all. Every line, year-round and seasonal, lives on the word ladders collection page if you’d like to see them side by side.
Try the routine with the free year-round sampler
Not sure which grade to start with? The free word ladders sampler has two year-round ladders per grade in both versions, with directions and an answer key. It lets you try the format before choosing a winter set. The sampler isn’t winter-themed.
A winter routine
It slots into the same homes as always: morning work, early finisher folders, literacy centers, the sub tub. Every page carries its own directions, so it’s an easy sub plan too.
If you already run the year-round set, nothing new needs teaching. My only tip is to print before the break, so that first Monday back is already covered.
So tell me: what does January look like in your room? I’d love to hear which routines hold up when recess moves indoors.
Warmly,
Kristen
